About Us
"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." Mark 1:17
When Jesus calls his disciples, he calls them to come experience life with himself. Oddly enough, Jesus does not explain what this life is like beforehand; he simply offers the invitation. "Come, follow me..."
We want do the same here. Please come join us to experience life with Jesus. The information below is our limited attempt to let you get to know us a little better. If you have any questions, please contact us.
Our Beliefs
"...Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have..." 1 Peter 3:15
Each Sunday our worship service includes singing, times of prayer, scripture reading, communion, contribution, sermon, and time for individual response. Occasionally we will have other activities. As our guest, you are invited to join with us as we glorify God each Sunday morning.
A Cappella Singing
One of the unique things about Churches of Christ is our a cappella singing. That simply means that we sing without the accompaniment of musical instruments in our worship assemblies. We pray you'll find the music both beautiful and meaningful. Our church family loves to sing praises to God.
Prayer and Scripture Reading
Through prayer and scripture reading, we talk to and listen to God.
Communion: The Lord's Supper
Each Sunday morning, we remember Jesus' death on the cross and celebrate our resulting freedom from sin by participating together in communion (the Lord's Supper). During this memorial, plates containing unleavened bread are passed throughout the congregation. The bread symbolizes the body of Jesus as He sacrificed Himself on the cross. Participants will break off a piece of bread, eat it, and meditate on His death in their behalf. Next, trays filled with individual cups are distributed. The cups contain grape juice symbolizing the blood of Jesus. Each participant drinks the contents of one cup, replaces the cup in the tray, and continues to think about the forgiveness God offers through Jesus. Communion is open to all baptized believers.
Weekly Contribution
Each Sunday morning, plates are passed to collect the weekly financial gifts of our members which support many ministries here at Huntsville.
Message
We have an exhortation that helps us focus on building a stronger spiritual life. Most Sundays our pulpit minister, Bob Payne, delivers the sermon.
Songs for Meditation and Commitment
At the conclusion of the message, we sing songs to allow time for each of us to think about our own relationship with God and the many ways He enriches our lives. People are invited to respond by coming to the front of the Auditorium for baptism, prayer, or to indicate a desire to become a member of this church family.
Church Of Christ History
Restored On Principles Of The First-Century Church, during the late 18th century, men and leaders of different denominations throughout the world, each studying individually, began to question the establishment of denominations and creeds and some of the practices that were being taught. These men asked: Why not go back to the origins of the first-century church? Why not rely on the Bible as the only guide to our lives and worship, rather than the creeds of man that had been established over years of corruption in the church? These men encouraged teaching ONLY what the Bible taught, without additions or subtractions, which are both condemned in the New Testament (Galatians 1:6-9; Revelations 22:18,19).
Each Congregation Is Self-Governed
The restoration of the church of Christ was not the establishment of another denomination, but instead was the abolition of denomonationalism that had been destroying Christ's church. Each congregation is autonomous and independent of other congregations. They are not ruled by a bureaucracy formed by man to govern the activities and worship of the congregation. These type of organizations are not ordained in the New Testament. Congregations of the churches of Christ are governed locally by the elders selected from among the local members. These are men that meet the qualifications of an elder outlined in the Bible in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Deacons are also appointed in each congregation to help in service to it's members and in missionary activities. These are men that meet specific qualifications outlines in 1 Timothy 3.
